Fire Service Career Info.
First thing is get registered as a student with ACC:
http://www.austincc.edu/apply// Your school counselor may be able to assist you with this, but it is pretty straightforward.
You will need to get a basic fire cert and your EMT basic cert to be a career fire fighter in Texas. It is typically easier to get into an EMT program then a fire program. Generally, there will be less of a wait to get into any EMT class. Fire academies give preference for EMTs cadets first. Remember these are college level courses, and they will be tougher than anything you have likely encountered in high school. So study (learn how to study if you do not know how).
Things to consider are cost, time available, and the ability to get in!
For your Fire cert, your options are:
-ACC fire academy website and fill out the online form, there is a waiting list:
http://www.austincc.edu/fireprot/Academy.html click on "fire academy" Take time to read about the program as well.
-Oakhill academy:
http://www.oakhillfire.org/fireacademy.aspx also take time to read about the program.
-Travis County Minority Academy

For your EMT:
-got to ACC website:
http://www.austincc.edu/health/emsp/
-Oakhill offers EMT training also. Info is found at the link above.

Once you have these two certs, you can begin applying for most small fire departments. For big departments like Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Ft Worth you can test any time as long as you meet their minimum requirements. I recommend you do this while you are taking your fire or EMT courses. That way you have all of your bases covered.
